Goyang City's Strategic Initiative for Esports
Goyang City is taking significant steps towards fostering the esports and gaming industry as a key driver of future content industries. The city announced on June 6 that it will allocate a total of 80 million KRW, including 50 million KRW from national funding and 30 million KRW from local sources, for the preparation of the 'Goyang City Esports Promotion and Game Industry Development Basic Plan and Feasibility Study.'
The objective of this study is to formulate a five-year basic plan for the Goyang-style esports and gaming industry that will be applicable from 2027 to 2031. The research is set to commence in the second half of this year and will span eight months, with the final plan expected to be confirmed in the first half of next year.
The study will analyze market trends in the domestic and international esports and gaming sectors, as well as evaluate Goyang City's industrial foundation and related infrastructure. It aims to gather input from various stakeholders, including citizens, youth, businesses, and teams, to identify policy initiatives that resonate with local characteristics.
The initiative will expand the focus from just facilities and events to creating an industrial ecosystem that fosters growth among businesses, content creators, and talent. Plans include attracting businesses and teams, enhancing esports tournaments, nurturing professional talent, and supporting startups and related companies.
Additionally, the integration of local infrastructure will be a key focus, utilizing venues such as KINTEX for large exhibitions and the upcoming IP convergence content cluster scheduled to open in 2028. This cluster, spanning 5,198 square meters, will serve as a hub for the creation and commercialization of IP in webtoons, video, and gaming, enhancing synergies across the content industry.
Mayor Min Kyung-sun stated, "We will thoroughly analyze the conditions and actual demands of the esports industry to establish a long-term development direction tailored to Goyang City." The city plans to build a sustainable industrial ecosystem by linking its industrial, cultural, and tourism infrastructure with the esports and gaming sectors, attracting related companies and talent.
